Big Snow 12/9/09
Written by Deb on December 10th, 2009Our part of Wisconsin got totally shut down by a huge blizzard that started 12/8 and went through yesterday. All schools and the university were closed, all government offices were closed, the clinic I work at was closed. We were totally stranded due to huge drifts in our driveway until someone could come last night to plow us out.
My a.m. started when I tried to turn the dogs out about 7 a.m. and could not open either of our doors to the outside due to huge drifts (which you will see in the photos). We finally had to take out a pane of glass on the storm door so I could climb through it to the other side, shovel out around the door and let the dogs out. The snow is extremely heavy and wet so I could only get it shoveled out enough to open the door wide enough for us to squeeze through. My husband, Kent, can do NO shoveling as unfortunately Kent had a heart attack last Friday so we aren’t going to be shovelled out for quite some time I’m afraid.
To get to the barn I had to walk on the edge of the fence due to hip deep drifts and since no gates would open had to climb over the fence. Walking through the hip deep drifts was too strenuous for Kent right now so he managed to get into the hay mow (which is level by our driveway) then I lowered the stairs so he could climb down into the barn. We had to kick snow out of the way to slide open one side of the barn door.
Here are some photos from the farm showing the amount of snow we are dealing with.
Now the sky is a magnificent shade of blue today and the winds have started dying down but it is only zero out with wind chills in the minus 20s so winter has hit us hard in a very short period of time.

We got a little of the snow, but thankfully not near as much as you guys. We have the cold though, but the 27 today felt warm!!! I’m praying for you guys and hoping hubby a fast and full recovery.
Thanks, Stephanie.
I love the shots of the horses in the snow. There’s just something about that image.
Thanks! I got lucky with those photos as I wasn’t sure how they would turn out in the light/blowing snow.
Deb-
Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me on Wednesday. Hope you are recovering for the big blizzard! I enjoyed your website; your dogs are beautiful! Can you recommend a lab breeder who would have a litter ready to go home March-April? You mentioned one that may have pups ready in January. That is a possibility, but Spring would be optimal. Thanks again for your time!

Sent you a private reply, let me know if you have other questions.
Love the photos…and OMG can’t even
imagine the snow and cold..I will
never complain again..LOL. I was 30 when I saw snow for the first time..Joe took me to Tahoe…I cried it was so beautiful..but what you guys have is another story..wow.
Hope things are better for all of you
now.
Hi Donna:
Thanks for the note and hope you know I was kidding about the “wimp” comment. It can be such a challenge here in the winter but I love it here otherwise. We had friends over today to help with digging out — they spent almost 3 hours helping us dig out gates, barn and arena doors, paths, the deck, etc. The pugs can certainly get around better now as can the mini horses/mini donkeys (snow is up to their bellies in spots). So nice to not have to squeeze sideways to go through a door!!
Yellow Labs in the white snow, so beautiful.
Our Lilly looks white in the house, but in the snow, you know she is a Yellow Lab.
Dont they just love to play in it.
Ive made some videos of her, must get them up.

Well for all its being a pain for you to deal with, it’s really beautiful, isn’t it?
Your dogs seem to be frolicking.
I love the slide show… well-done! And fun to watch.
